Cultural Tourism in Costa Rica

Costa Rica has one of the best cultural preservation systems of Central America. During your stay you will surely have the opportunity to visit one of the thousands of museums of the country and have an experience of cultural tourism in Costa Rica.

Costa Ricans, also known as “Ticos”, are famous for being very hospitable people. This is a very important mark of cultural tourism in Costa Rica. People of Costa Rica are very peaceful, so much that this is one of the few countries in the world that do not have an army.

Culture of Costa Rica is very diverse thanks especially to the multiculturalism of its people: thousands of years of immigration allowed a mix, very typical of American countries, between native people and immigrants from Africa, Italy, China and plenty countries of different corners of the World. So this makes that one of the best ways to know the culture and way of life of Costa Rica is to approach to its people.

A great part of cultural heritage of Costa Rica is, naturally, due to pre-Colombian civilizations, which legacy is well conserved in Costa Rican museums: the most notable collections include gold, jade, pre-Colombian pieces, colonial religious art and contemporary art.

As natural, the most important museums of Costa Rica are located in the capital city, San Jose, where you can find the National Museum of Costa Rica and the Museum of Costa Rican Art. However there are many local museums, called community museums, mainly focused on bio-diversity preservation and native people cultural heritage. All of them very interesting, but remarkable ones are the Abangares Mines museum, the Indigenous Boruca museum and the Chortega Ceramics museum in San Vicente in the province of Nicoya.
